Our chapter in the upcoming State of Open Data Report is out for public draft! Read our draft before its published in 2019.

About the State of Open Data project:

The State of Open Data is a new project that seeks to review the development of the open data movement over the past 10 years. This will be a straightforward assessment of successes or failures that will look back in order to look forward at how best to shape the future of open data around the world.

The project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) under the Open Data for Development (OD4D) Programme. The project is coordinated by a small team, but the intention is to seek the participation of a large number of open data leaders and researchers to author a range of chapters on diverse themes and areas of activity.

After ten years, are individuals, organizations, and governments able to get involved with open data more easily? Are stakeholders really starting to work on new open data initiatives based on evidence and research, or still being steered by the ‘hot topic’ of the day? Are activists chasing unachievable dreams or seeking to solve real problems that will affect the lives of everyday people around the world?

We need to start making informed decisions, both individually and as a movement. Moreover, we need to learn from our past to be able to move forward in a much more strategic way. Looking back at the last decade gives us an opportunity to identify where we can improve and where we can work more effectively together in the future. Completing this work now, when challenges to sustainability are seemingly all around us, is the focus of The State of Open Data project.
